LATEST NEWS from … Steve Dunfee

- 06 Nov 2020 -

In this interview, Elizabeth caught up with Steve on his new single “It’s an Amazing Day” which is released on 6 November 2020.

First of all, tell us about you, Steve. When were you first introduced to music?

Music has been part of my life as far back as I can remember.  My mom always had something playing on the stereo at home while dad was away at work during the day.  I loved so many of the old albums she would play which were a little bit of just about every kind of music at the time.  I had my first taste of playing music in grade school after they had all students take a musical aptitude test at the start of my 4th grade year.  I did extremely well on the test and was recruited by the music teacher for the school band as a baritone player. I played a mean oom-pa!

Who has been the greatest influence on your sound?

That’s a tough question to answer definitively because I feel like there have been several strong influences on my sound. If I had to choose just one, I think I would single out John Denver because he was so versatile in his music and I feel I am very much the same.

When did you start work on this new single? How was the process?

This song was born earlier this year right after the whole COVID-19 pandemic hit the world.  This may sound weird to some but I really didn’t have to write it, the song wrote itself.  One morning I woke up with this song in my head and I picked up my guitar and just started singing it.  Then I wrote it down so I wouldn’t forget it.  I truly believe that God blessed me with this song. As we are called to be a blessing to others, what is a blessing if we keep it to ourselves and don’t share it with others?  So, I think God is sending a message to the world through this song.

Can you sum up the single musically?

Musically, this song is a blend of Southern Gospel and Bluegrass wrapped up into a powerful package full of movement with strong lyrics and excellent phrasing.  I sang my own four-part harmony in Southern Gospel fashion on the choruses with the hope of really touching the souls of listeners.

How do you work on your lyrics? Do lyrics or the music come first?

In most cases, my lyrics and melodies evolve together as I usually write with my guitar in my hand.

Whats been the reception from listeners so far?

So far, the DJ’s and industry friends I have sent “It’s An Amazing Day” to have seemed to really love and enjoy it.  To quote one response, “I really love the lyrics, and I can’t get the chorus out of my head.”  I’ll take that kind of feedback any day!

How did the title come about?

The title was a “no-brainer” – the first four words of the song, “It’s an amazing day” was simply perfect!

 What’s next for Steve Dunfee?

I ask this question of myself rather often and usually struggle to find an answer.  However, in this case I know the answer.  I am in the process of working on a new album and “It’s An Amazing Day” will be one of its tracks, and is the first single from the album to be released.  The new album is titled “Mountain Spirit” and will include a collection of new original songs of muses inspired by faith in God, and Appalachian mountain living and history.  Production is under way and my fans can look forward to the release of “Mountain Spirit” in early spring 2021.
