Music & Me with … Hipster Pug

- 01 Dec 2020 -

In this interview, I chatted to Tom (aka Hipster Pug) who has recently released his new album called Neon Noir, an ambient album with a cinematic feeling. Neon Noir is a album about growth, overcoming fears and self confidence,  starting with a dark ambient sound (Noir) to a more happier and lighter sound (Neon), later on in the album.

Tell me, Tom, when were you first introduced to music?

If you mean creating music, that was back in 2018. I had a gaming channel on YouTube and really disliked it to that point so I was looking to do something new. Then I remembered that I had made some songs with Music Shake. After releasing a couple of songs on Music Shake, I saw that people liked them so I moved onto making music with samples, as Hipster Pug, and that was really the start to making music.

Tell me about your favourite teachers

I remember a teacher that taught us theatre for two years which was always a lot of fun. I got to act in two school plays. One of them was based on the Odyssey, and since that moment I have been really interested in Greek mythology.

What are your fondest musical memories?

Seeing Tash Sultana live in Paris in Olympia that was a very special concert. I also remember the Jam Sessions from Kyteman Orchestra that was also really special, I was lucky to go to the sessions twice, and both times were amazing, the best concerts I have ever seen.

What is your favourite TV theme tune and/or film soundtrack?

Hope you don’t mind, there are a couple I have to mention! The Stranger Things soundtrack from All Seasons, which is perfect 80’s synth sound something what I love, plus I love the 80’s style of the soundtracks. Also, Game of Thrones (Light of the Seven and The Night King), which for me are two of the best songs ever made for a TV show, and I often listen to them. There are really a lot more soundtracks I love. For example, the soundtrack from Lion is also amazing it was made by Hauscka and it is really worth listening to. I also recommend the soundtrack from the Great Gatsby (2013), and Green Light is a great song from that soundtrack.

What was the last music download/ CD you bought?

I bought 2 new albums and probably the favorite of the year. Olafur Arnalds: Some Kind of Peace, an fantastic Neo Classical/ambient album, and Ibrahim Maalouf: 40 Melodies which is a collection of his songs from his previous albums.

Imagine you’ve been given GBP 250 to spend on anything music-related. How will you spend it?

I would use it to buy a Korg S20 Mini. I really want to work more with analogue synths and probably buy a looper to loop music without the use of a DAW, like Ableton.

How do you balance music with your other obligations?

I always try to find time to sit down after work and jam a bit just try out some sounds and if I’m lucky I discover something I like and can work build up the song from there

Happiness is …  I can only speak for myself because it is different for everyone. I think making music and the progress of making a song brings me happiness. And the moment you work on a song and hear something that works, makes me always really happy. And it even means more to me when the people who listen to my music like the song I made too! 😊
